John Howard the Scout?

September 5th 2006 11:37
2007 will be the 100th Anniversary of Scouting. To celebrate this Scouts Australia have announced they plan to get 100 celebrities to wear a Scout scarf to promote Scouting in Australia. One of the celebrities who have been approached is John Howard...

Now, the Scout scarf is one of the most important parts of a Scout uniform and you only can get it from a Scout Group once you have been invested. So, my question is, if John Howard is wearing a scarf, will we invest him into Scouts? And will we ask him to take the Scout Promise which asks a Scout, amongst other things, to "live by the Scout Laws"? Maybe they will, maybe John Howard will make that promise, but it would mean he'd have to change the way he's lived...

A Scout is trustworthy
So do we trust John Howard after he told us there would "never ever" be a GST?
Do we trust John Howard after he told us refugees threw their children into the sea?
Do we trust John Howard after he told us that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction?

A Scout is loyal
So would this be the loyalty he has shown to Peter Reith who took the blame for the children overboard scandal? Would this be the loyalty he showed Peter Costello after he stood aside and let Howard take the Liberal leadership? Would this be the loyalty he showed Malcom Fraser who launched Howard's political career by making him a minister? Or would it be the loyalty he has shown the Liberal voters who trusted Howard when he made his promises to them?

A Scout is helpful
Ok fair enough, Howard is very helpful, as long as you have the money to donate to his election campaign...

A Scout is friendly and a Scout is cheerful
We all know John Howard, he's a friendly, cheerful, Aussie bloke. Walking around the neighbourhood in his green and gold Wallabies tracksuit. Howard is always cheerful and friendly, just as long as your not Aboriginal, or Muslim, or homosexual...

A Scout is considerate
Ok fair enough, I'm sure Howard thinks about the Lebanese civilians dodging Israeli bombs, or the refugees living in camps (can't say prisons because then, according to Australian law, the conditions would have to be better...) on Nauru, or the people of West Papua living under the control of the Indonesian military... he cares, it's just they don't vote...

A Scout is thrifty
What would you do with a surplus of several billion dollars? Do you give it to tax breaks to baby boomers? Or do you use it to invest in education, training and infrastructure? But then again, baby boomers vote for him, there's got to be some reward.

A Scout is courageous
Howard is courageous. I mean he refused to allow an Australian citizen to be held in prison for five years without charge by our ally. He refused to allow Australian companies to support the Indonesian military in their exploitation of West Papua. He refused to allow Australian companies to continue to make Australia one of the highest polluters per capita... what? didn't he?

A Scout is respectful
Well hey, if I had been voted in by a group of people four times I would show them some respect and maybe honour the promises I made... but what would I know? I'm a kooky Green...

A Scout cares for the environment.
Do I even need to explain this one? I could talk about the wind farms being vetoed because they "bring down the value of properties in the area." or the money given to Forestry Tasmania to fight the Greens lawsuit to try and stop logging in a World Heritage Site or the aforementioned thumbing of the nose at Japanese and the Kyoto Protocol (then lecturing them because they hunt whales.. good one guys!).

So yes, maybe John Howard will make that promise... but then again, would you trust him to keep it?

John Howard is one of the most un-scoutlike people you can find.
