Thoughts of a Young Green
September 1st 2006 14:19
Just a quick post to welcome you to my blog.
I am a member of the Australian Greens in Melboure Australia and was one of the founding members of the Young Greens in Victoria. I am also the Campaign Manager for the Greens' Candidate for the State Election in the District of Kew.
This has been an exciting opportunity for the candidate Emma, and myself. The Greens have encouraged young people to really get involved in this state election and Emma is one of about ten candidates who are under 25. Considering the current youngest member of parliament is 32, this is big.
We came into the election with the plan of taking Kew's Green primary vote from 17% (at the 2002 election) to around the 25% mark. Being honest, we didn't expect to win. The seat is in one of the wealthiest areas of Melbourne and has been held by the Liberal Party (or it's predecessor the UAP) since the 1920s.
However, since we started campaigning people have started taking notice of us. We met Andrew Macintosh, the current member for Kew, and he told us that he wouldn't even be beginning to campaign until parliament stopped sitting mid October, and the Labor Party so strongly believe they can't win the seat that they haven't even bothered to announce a candidate yet!
Emma and I are getting out there, Emma got a large article and photograph in the local paper this week and we've been knocking on doors in the area saying "Where's the other candidates? Does Andrew Macintosh juste xpect to waltz in again?" I think he is in for a surprise if he thinks he will.
I'm not saying we're definitely going to win, but at the moment it's no longer a fore-gone conclusion. Keep an eye out for Emma Henley... she has a future in politics.
So welcome to the thoughts of a Young Green. Keep an eye out in the coming days and weeks for my thoughts on politics across Australia, and the globe.
